Several promising gamers are beginning to shine, as the regularity of The Toyota Gaming Engine [TTGE], African Cyber Gaming League [ACGL], and Kasi Gamerz’ esports tournaments across Western Cape communities continue.

Since the inaugural event on Heritage Day in September, several tournaments have been hosted around Strand, along with the recent Trenchtown event. These events have helped uncover and develop players capable of competing at the highest level.

At Trenchtown, Athi and Dale had finished first and second respectively and made another appearance at the tournament on Saturday 5 November at Christmas Tinto Primary School.

Both players got off to a confident start, with Dale securing comfortable early-round wins in a FIFA masterclass. Reatile – who had finished seventh at Trenchtown, and was one of the regular attendees over the campaign – was quietly making his way through the early rounds of the tournament. Unfortunately for him, he eventually met Athi in round four of the upper bracket.

While Athi marched on, it was not without a fight from Reatile who then found himself in the lower bracket, where newcomer Maino was rampaging through players. Maino eased past Reatile, 4-1, to face Fifi in the lower bracket semi-final. Fifi continued his recovery after landing in the lower bracket by beating Maino 2-1 to face off against Dale in the lower bracket final.

Dale found himself in the lower bracket final after a near-flawless run in the upper bracket. That was until he met Athi in the upper bracket final and found himself on the receiving end of a 4-1 loss.

The Fifi and Dale match-up would determine the player who would face the up-till-now undefeated Athi in the tournament’s grand final. Dale again stepped up to deliver a decisive knockout as he secured the match, 3-1, to face the player who must now be considered his arch-rival – Athi – in the grand final.

For those unfamiliar with the double elimination bracket, a short lesson:

  • All players start in the upper bracket.
  • Each player’s first loss drops the player to the lower bracket.
  • If they lost whilst in the lower bracket, that player is eliminated.
  • The winner of the lower bracket meets the winner of the upper bracket in the grand final.
  • To win the grand final, the upper bracket winner only needs to win once. The lower bracket winner needs to beat the upper bracket winner twice to claim the championship.

Upper bracket winner Athi was the player with the advantage in this case. But dale came out fighting and secured the match, 2-1, to gain the chance of claiming the crown. The bracket was reset. The next match was winner-takes-all.

In a more cautious match than their previous encounters, it took a single goal to determine the day’s champ. And that winner was Athi, matching his Trenchtown event’s result and singling these two players out as the current ones to beat.

The action will continue over the coming weeks with tournaments in Strand, a return to Trenchtown, and another premier event being announced soon. Follow the link, sign up to TTGE and keep up with the latest in local esports news and tournaments.
