IT’S BEEN A GREAT YEAR FOR EKASI FIFA TOURNAMENTS
The Toyota Gaming Engine [TTGE], African Cyber Gaming League [ACGL] and Kasi Gamerz collaboration kicked off in September this year, aiming to bring more regular gaming and esports to residents in Strand and surrounding townships.
Having started as a passion project in 2013, the original Kasi Gamerz events saw around 20 participants compete. With a current average of around 60 players per event, the level of competition amongst the players has grown exponentially.
Recent attendee and multiple event winner, Athi, has recently become a FUT Champions Verified player, gaining access to the online regional cups offered in the Global Series.
That meant the FIFA Community Tournament on 26 November would see Athi as the player to beat. Unfortunately, this was the first event in months that he would not attend, leaving the door open for one of the other participants to stake their claim as the next player to watch.
A newcomer to the arena, Sgemshi made a flying start with three consecutive victories that saw him win without conceding a goal. He also scored a total of 16 goals in those games. His first challenge came in the quarter-finals when Alutha put two goals past him. That didn’t stop Sgemshi’s march to victory, however, as he bagged four goals in another impressive display.
His run drew to an end in the semi-final against Fisto. Sgemshi felt what it’s like to be on the opposite end of a comprehensive victory as Fisto secured a place in the finals with a 4-0 victory.
Waiting in the finals was a regular face, and regular runner-up in previous tournaments, Dale. Without Athi in attendance, Dale was clearly the favourite to take the top spot, and he did not let his supporters down. In another cool and confident display of skills, Dale took the win over Fisto by four goals, without conceding one.
After the last few months, it’s clear now that the top two players competing in the Strand events are Athi and Dale. They will have a number of upcoming events to really show their progress as the Community Tournaments return on 10 December. These will be followed by a Trenchtown event on 16 December and the R5,000 cash tournament at Radisson RED in Cape Town on 17 December.
