TTGE, ACGL AND KASI GAMERS TAKE ESPORTS BACK TO SCHOOL
The ongoing initiative by The Toyota Gaming Engine [TTGE], African Cyber Gaming League [ACGL] and Kasi Gamerz has garnered attention and led to a recent school event for pupils in Strand townships.
Over 80 school pupils from Christmas Tinto Primary School and surrounding schools joined the event on 12 November to compete in a FIFA tournament, and enjoy some free-play games.
For many of the players competing in the FIFA tournament, the day was their first formal competitive experience, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm and camaraderie between the competitors.
The early rounds saw most players hold their own against their respective opponents, with no massive score lines recorded. Even an 11-goal thriller went the distance with a single goal determining the winner.
The middle rounds of the tournament bracket started to mark out the players with the most potential. There is clearly a growing pool of talented players for the local ecosystem, with the attendees between 11 and 13 years of age, However, this will only be fully realised with more opportunities to compete and practice.
By the time we made it to the final, the remaining crowd had found their favourite. The two young competitors were Lonke and Mvuzo, who gave the spectators an exciting match that eventually went to Mvuzo by the slimmest of margins as he took the final 3-2.
The success of the event has already prompted additional requests by local schools to host tournaments, and the team on the ground will continue to make every effort to ensure the opportunities continue.
The FIFA community tournaments continue over the coming weeks in Strand. The players that perform well will secure themselves spots at an upcoming tournament to be hosted at the Radisson RED in Cape Town, where cash and vouchers will be up for grabs.
