Esports will be included in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as a pilot event running over two days. The inaugural Commonwealth Esports Games will have separate branding, medals and organisation.

There is hope that esports becomes a part of the full programme by the 2026 games. Frontrunners for the 2030 event, Hamilton in Canada, are reportedly keen on esports' inclusion. Despite opposition from traditionalists, exploring esports is one of the recommendations outlined in the Commonwealth Games Federation’s strategic roadmap to engage younger audiences.
